Emergency Room & Behavioral Unit
Hillcrest Medical Center
I’ve been interested in medicine for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I would give up recess to hang out with the school nurse. After I spent time as a combat medic in the Army and worked as an EMT, I realized I loved the energy and excitement of emergency nursing. I took a job as an ER technician at Hillcrest Medical Center and decided to go back to school to get my bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Working at Hillcrest Medical Center while I was in school was a great experience. My managers were really flexible with my schedule, and I learned a lot on the job. I was even able to take advantage of the hospital’s scholarship program, which helped with expenses. When I graduated in May, there were many opportunities available to me, but I chose to stay at Hillcrest.
The culture at Hillcrest Medical Center is extremely friendly. While I was in school, I did clinicals in several other hospitals. Those experiences taught me to value the relationship I have with my managers and co-workers. I always feel welcomed and supported here, and there is a level of respect that I believe is unique. The cultural environment here encourages feedback, and management isn’t afraid to act or initiate changes if something isn’t working as well as it could. The benefits are very good too. After working here for five years, this just feels like home.
