Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Hillcrest Medical Center
Before I became a nurse, I worked at Hillcrest Medical Center as a housekeeper on the critical care floors. The nurses I encountered were so kind and nurturing to their patients; it made a lasting impression. When I went back to college, I chose nursing. Since then, I’ve visited other hospitals in Tulsa but I’ve never seen the level of compassion I’ve witnessed here.
My initial experience made me want to work in the critical care area, so I started out in the neonatal intensive care unit. In that department, we have the opportunity to nurture the babies who are born as early as 24 weeks. It’s rewarding to watch them gain weight and thrive before leaving the hospital many weeks later with hope for a healthy life.
I’ve made some great memories during my time at Hillcrest Medical Center. Once during a shift change, I was leaving work when I noticed a couple having difficulty in the parking garage. I realized the woman was in labor and was going to deliver the baby right away. Another bystander and I quickly sent for one of the neonatalogists who was upstairs getting ready for their arrival. Together, we were able to deliver a healthy baby right there in the parking garage!
Hillcrest Medical Center is a positive place to work, and the people really care about our patients. I see this compassion and dedication throughout the hospital and it’s a part of the reason I’ve stayed for eight years.
